The Fellowship

The State Department selects FAIT Fellows annually for the two-year program that prepares these individuals to be successful Foreign Service IT specialists.

The FAIT Fellowship selected 42 fellows in its first five cohorts; 14 FAIT fellows have already entered duty as Foreign Service Information Management Specialists (IMSs) and are assigned abroad.

The FAIT Fellowship is a Path to a Career in the Foreign Service

The talented individuals selected for the fellowship program:

  • Receive academic assistance from the Department to complete the last two years of their undergraduate degree or a two-year master’s degree in an IT-related field.
  • Receive hands-on diplomatic IT training through internships at the State Department in Washington, and at a U.S. diplomatic post abroad (Embassy, Consulate, or Mission).
  • Receive personalized mentorship and professional development throughout the Fellowship program.
  • Receive an appointment in the Foreign Service as an Information Management Specialist after completing an academic program, as well as successfully meeting all Fellowship and State Department’s entry requirements.
  • Embark on an exciting career supporting diplomacy through technology around the world.

FAIT Fellows describe the fellowship as an “opportunity of a lifetime.”
